DIY – Using air pressure switches with a Hub or Connect

Our resident electronics expert has some tips on using air pressure switches with the Ensemble. These are great for embedding into soft play or situations where the actual switch might be taking a lot of abuse.

“Hiya guys,

If you would like to wire a pressure switch to your device (e.g. RS part numbers 319-720 & 319-708), here are some pointers…

The switch shown can be wired as normally open or normally closed, the following details are for normally open. When enough pressure is generated the contact will close and make the circuit.

The key part with any switch with multiple wiring connections is to find out which is the common contact. This can often be found from the manufacturers website or with a multimeter on resistance range/”bleep” test…

In the picture below is a Herga pressure switch (see part numbers above). To wire this up you need the connections being touched by the meter probes…

This would then go to tip and sleeve on the 3.5mm plugs (mono plug, switch) OR tip & ring on the 1/4″ jack (stereo plug, variable sensor).

As I mentioned before if you are using other brands, or types of switches then it’s worth double checking which is the common contact AND the normally open and closed contacts depending on how you want the switch to work in your system…”
